Moultonborough Receives Safe Routes to Schools Grant

The Town of Moultonborough, in partnership with the Moultonborough SAU, has received a $5,000 Safe Routes to Schools Grant from the NH Department of Transportation.  The grant will support an effort by the two bodies to assess the current and best routes for foot and cycling travel in the two mile radius around the schools serving k-8 students and the best way to enhance those to boost non-auto travel for the students.  The effort will be guided with the participation of a Task Force of elected officials, safety, public works, educators, cycling activist and parents.

Karel Crawford, Chairman of the Moultonborough Selectmen said, “Improving the climate for walking and cycling is not only an important public health and transportation matter in its own right, but an integral part of any improvements dealing with the challenges along the Route 25 Corridor.”  She continued, “It is also but one more example of what the two organizations can accomplish working together.”  Mike Lancor, Superintendent of Schools said, “This grant provides an opportunity for the School Board and Select Board to work together on a project that could benefit students and other community members by providing safe routes for walking and bicycling.”

The results of the study will be shared with the community in the Spring of 2009 as a part of a promotional campaign on pedestrian and cycling safety and the positive aspects of both.  More information on the state Safe Routes to Schools program can be obtained at http://www.nh.gov/dot/bureaus/planning/SRTS_home.htm.
